The number of beneficiary farmer families of this bund business is 76.61 hectares (190 acres).
The old weir structure that provided irrigation facilities to the above fed area was destroyed due to flood damage in 1998, and instead a small weir named Pinwala weir was constructed in the upstream part of the weir, but it had harmful effects on the land and other properties of Oya Dele. Due to the incident, the use of anvil was severely limited, and later the right bank of the anvil was broken and washed away, so the use of the anvil had to be completely abandoned.
Therefore, instead of the Pinwala weir, which failed and was destroyed, the new Kanewela weir, consisting of six lift gates and other structures, with six lift gates and other structures, was constructed to provide irrigation water to a more easily and more nutritious area. 34 started in 2018 at a cost of 34, and the construction was completed in 2021 in several phases, and was handed over to the local agricultural association in the first quarter of 2022 by the current Honorable Governor, Marshal of the Sri Lanka Air Force Mr. Roshan Gunathilaka.

The Irrigation Department of the Western Province has been awarded a Gold award for the high performance Public Institution.


Reconstruction of Kanewela Anicut is being implemented successfully.

The jogging path around the Kesbewa tank was handed over to the public on 22nd February 2018. The Provincial Irrigation Department of the Western Province provided the consultancy service for this project.

At the “Inter Institutional Progress Management Competition” conducted at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort on 2017-12-21, with the participation of the Honorable Minister of Agriculture, Land, Irrigation, Fisheries, Animal production and Health and Agrarian Development, Mr. Gamini Thilakasiri, the Western Provincial Department of Irrigation has claimed the first place in the first group.
