An adequate water supply at correct time and drainage of excess water are major effective factors to obtain a high yield. The Provincial Department of Irrigation (W.P.) carries out the maintenance of irrigation system in the province which is the basic requirement for agriculture in order to increase the amount of agricultural production and to re-cultivate the abandoned paddy fields.
It is the responsibility of the Provincial Department of Irrigation (W.P.) to look after the maintenance of water source such as tanks, canals etc., construction, renovation and maintenance of minor irrigation systems using the funds allocated to the department.

Develop the Irrigation sector of the Western Province using it’s land and water by planning, constructing, maintaining and rehabilitating the Irrigation system, through modern technology and other resources towards the optimum agricultural productivity for the maximum benefits of the people while ensuring the sustainability of the sector..
